gobalaṃ ha vārṣṇaṃ śāṭyāyaniruvāca pitṛmānasi bhagavaḥ pitāmahavān
saṃvatsarāya dīkṣiṣye'nu mā śādhīti
tatheti hovāca
ayanaṃ te vakṣyāmi yadvidvānanārtassaṃvatsarasyodṛcaṃ gacchatyutthāyo yogakṣemī
paṇāyyo bhavatīti
tānvā etāndvādaśa māso yantīti hovāca
tato yāṃścaturo māso yantyagnereva tānayanena yanti
agniṃ caiva tena devatānāmupāpnuvantīmaṃ ca lokaṃ iti
atha yānaparāṃścaturo māso yanti vāyoreva tānayanena yanti
vāyuṃ caiva tena devatānāmupāpnuvantyantarikṣalokaṃ ceti
yānaparāṃścaturo māso yantyādityasyaiva tānayanena yanti
ādityaṃ caiva tena devatānāmupāpnuvantyamuṃ ca lokamiti

Śāṭyāyani said to Gobala Vārṣṇa: 'Revered sir, you possess illustrious ancestors and grandfathers. I intend to be consecrated for the year-long rite; instruct me.' He replied: 'So be it. I shall tell you the course knowing which, unafflicted, one reaches the conclusion of the year, and, having risen, becomes prosperous and praiseworthy.' He said: 'They proceed through these twelve months. The four months through which they proceed from there, they proceed through them by Agni's course; by that they attain Agni among the deities and this world. Then the next four months through which they proceed, they proceed through them by Vāyu's course; by that they attain Vāyu among the deities and the intermediate world. The next four months through which they proceed, they proceed through them by Āditya's course; by that they attain Āditya among the deities and that yonder world.'
