naśśivaidhīti
tūṣṇīṃ haivaike'dhirohanti
mano vai prajāpatiḥ
prājāpatyametadahariti
tāmanenāgre'dhirohedathānenāthānenāthānenāmṛtaṃ gamayeyamiti
athāsmā ārūḍhāya vāṇaṃ śatatantrīmāharanti
tametena saṃtānena saṃtanoti
bhūrbhuva svar
vadā vadā vadā vadī vadā vadoruḥ
pṛthussugassugantuḥ
karmaḥ karaṇaḥ karaḥ kariṣyan
ṣandrīṃ vācaṃ bṛhatīṃ viśvarūpām
śatāyuṣaṃ pravada deva vāṇa

athendraṇatayā ceṣīkayā vetasaśākhayā collikhati mano jyotiriti
vāksatyamiti mano bhadra iti
taṃ prayacchati
Some mount it with a reverent greeting alone: 'Homage be to you, revered one; we know you, be auspicious to us!' Some mount it silently, [thinking:] 'Mind is Prajāpati; this day belongs to Prajāpati.' He should mount it first with this [foot], then with this, then with this, then with this, [thinking:] 'May I attain immortality.' Then for him who has mounted they bring the vāṇa of a hundred strings. He tunes it with this continuity-formula: 'Bhūr bhuvas svar! Speak, speak, speak, speak, speak, wide one! Broad, easy to tread, easy to traverse! Doing, deed, doer, about to do! A dense, exalted, multiform voice, a hundred years of life, proclaim, divine vāṇa!' Then he scrapes it with a reed bent by Indra and with a cane branch, saying: 'Mind is light,' 'Speech is truth,' 'Mind is auspicious.' He hands it over.
