For it, five oxen roam, sprinkled [for sacrifice] through five autumns. Because five oxen roam, sprinkled [for sacrifice] through five autumns, therefore it is called the Pañcaśāradīya. And they are all dappled. For they say: ‘The Maruts have Pṛśni for their mother.’ Moreover, it is recited in a verse: ‘The Maruts have Pṛśni for their mother.’ Therefore they are dappled. The offering of the gods is vital power. They took that unto themselves. That it belongs to the Maruts alone, by that they place vital power in themselves. [With the words,] ‘The Marut [gods] belonging to the victors,’ ‘The Marut [gods] belonging to the friends,’ ‘The Marut [gods] having their own [domain],’ ‘The Maruts, the Maruts,’ ‘The Maruts belonging to the helpers.’ Now, as for ‘The Marut [gods] belonging to the victors,’ [it is so that] he may win that desire with which desire he sacrifices. Then as for ‘The Marut [gods] belonging to the friends,’ [it is so that] he may fully obtain that desire as one’s own fully obtained, with which desire he sacrifices. Then as for ‘The Marut [gods] having their own [domain],’ all this is indeed the Maruts' own property. He pleases them with their own property. Being pleased, they hand over to him their own property. Having received what was handed over, he sacrifices. Then as for ‘The Maruts, the Maruts’—
