When these creatures of his were released from Vṛtra, evil, they all thrived together (sākaṃ samaidhayanta).
In that they thrived together, that is the Sākamedha nature of the Sākamedhas.
Together with offspring and cattle he thrives, whoever knows thus.
The introductory verse of the first day contains 'anīka' (anīkavatī).
The animal is for Agni.
With Agni as the vanguard (anīka), Indra smote Vṛtra, evil.
In that the introductory verse contains 'anīka', [it is with the thought:] 'With Agni as the vanguard may I smite Vṛtra, evil.'
With Agni as the vanguard he smites his hateful, evil rival, whoever knows thus.
The introductory verse of the second day contains 'krīḍan' (krīḍanī).
The animals are for Agni and for Indra-and-Agni.
In that the introductory verse contains 'krīḍan', it is because the creatures, when released from Vṛtra, evil, played about (ākrīḍanta); therefore it contains 'krīḍan'.
Moreover, Indra, when about to smite Vṛtra, said to the Maruts: 'With axes in hand, play around me, so that free from fear I may smite Vṛtra, evil.'
The Maruts, with axes in hand, played around him.
Free from fear, he smote Vṛtra, evil.
Free from fear, he smites his hateful, evil rival, whoever knows thus.
The animal is for Agni; the sacrifice is Agni, lest we go away from Agni, the sacrifice.
