He said: 'Shall we sacrifice with this sacrifice as equal or as unequal?' 'As equal,' they said. In that they said, 'As equal,' they thereby made the rain equal, and in equality [they made] the realm, and they made agreement. But if they had said, 'As unequal,' the rain would have become unequal, the realm [would have been] in inequality, and there would have been disagreement. [They said:] 'By what shall we be united?' 'By the Yajñāyajñīya [sāman],' [he said]. Therefore they unite by the Yajñāyajñīya. The Yajñāyajñīya is speech; these worlds are speech. By speech they ascended unto speech. On the first day they gave three hundred and thirty-three [cattle]; through that, he prospered with the Vasus in this world. On the second day they gave three hundred and thirty-three [cattle]; through that, he prospered with the Rudras in this intermediate world. On the third day they gave three hundred and thirty-three [cattle]; through that, he prospered with the Ādityas in that world. He who, knowing thus, sacrifices with this sacrificial rite, prospers among these deities and attains these worlds.
