As to this they say: 'Since the first day is performed with the Gāyatrī, the second with the Triṣṭubh, the third with the Jagatī, and the fourth with the Anuṣṭubh, then why is this sacrifice proclaimed as belonging only to the Jagatī?' He should say: 'Just as a man having many horses or many mules goes along yoking one after another, even so they mount upon one meter after another in the Jagatī.' And also, because these chants, when praised together, turn into the Jagatī, for that reason too it belongs to the Jagatī. Moreover, the Jagatī is the eldest among the meters. Therefore, people designate householders according to seniority; they designate householders [in this way] through him who knows thus. This [sacrifice] which is performed with the Bṛhat and Rathantara is indeed a two-day rite. On the verses 'Toward you, the bull, pressed...', they should make the Rathantara the pṛṣṭha on the third day. Because it begins with 'Toward you', they do not depart from the form of the Rathantara. The third day is performed with the unexhausted Gāyatrī. 'Who was that Indra to you with aid...' is the Maitrāvaruṇa's sāman. Its syllables here correspond. On the verses 'Thee we seek with sacrifices...', they should make the Bṛhat the pṛṣṭha on the fourth day. Because it begins with 'Thee', they do not depart from the form of the Bṛhat. The fourth day is performed with the unexhausted Anuṣṭubh. 'We to thee, unapproached...' is the Maitrāvaruṇa's sāman. Its syllables here correspond.
