The sacrifice consists of five parts: [he thinks,] 'As great as is the measure of the sacrifice, that may I attain.' Cattle consist of five parts: [he thinks,] 'As great as is the measure of cattle, by so much may cattle wait upon me, being obtained.' Food consists of five parts: [he thinks,] 'As great as is the measure of food, by so much may food wait upon me, being obtained.' These are five days. The year has five seasons; the year is Prajāpati, the sacrifice. By this, he attains the year, Prajāpati, the sacrifice. The gods and the Asuras contended; they did not conquer by clubs or arrows. They said: 'We shall not conquer by clubs or arrows; let our victory be in speech alone, in the brahman.' They thought: 'Whichever of us shall speak first to the other, those shall overcome the others.' Those gods said to the Asuras: 'Speak first.' 'You indeed,' the Asuras said to the gods. Those gods saw this pair of speech.
