These descendants of Babara are indeed commendable among the Kurus.
He used to walk around at that sacrificial ground, [saying]: "This I sacrificed; this I did not sacrifice."
Now, concerning this [rite] of which there is the three-day period [consisting of] Jyotis, Go, and Āyus; the Viśvajit-Sarvapṛṣṭhya; the Ukthya with the Ṣoḍaśin; the Chandoma-Pavamāna; the all-stoma Ukthya; the twenty-fivefold Mahāvrata; and the Jyotir-Atirātra: whoever should desire, "Having undertaken the Abhiplava, having undertaken the Pṛṣṭhas, having undertaken the Chandomas, may the Mahāvrata be undertaken by me," he should sacrifice with this.
Having undertaken the Abhiplava, having undertaken the Pṛṣṭhas, having undertaken the Chandomas, the Mahāvrata is undertaken by him. Food, indeed, is the Mahāvrata, for the obtaining of food.
Regarding this they say: "The Mahāvrata should not be undertaken before a year."
As to why there is the pṛṣṭhya six-day period: the pṛṣṭhas are the seasons;
the seasons are the year.
The year ripens all food; they approach that food as won by the year.
The twenty-fivefold Mahāvrata: the twenty-fivefold is indeed food, for the obtaining of food.
The Jyotir-Atirātra [is the concluding day].
This is indeed the known ford of the gods, namely the Jyotir-Atirātra.
"By the known ford of the gods, unharmed, I shall unharmed attain the completion," [he thinks].
