then the day that is in the middle, that is the independent ruler, that is the heavenly world. Thereby they go to the zenith of the sun, they go to independent rule, thereby they become not dependent on another. These nights correspond indeed to the virāj; and they reach the lordship and sovereignty of food, which belongs to the virāj. There are three and there is the virāj. Those which are the three divine coverings, of them this is the prosperity: the three meters, the three pressings, the three breaths—in-breath, out-breath, and through-breath—and these three worlds. Whatever is threefold, of all that this is the prosperity, the attainment of that. Now this thirty-three-night rite is indeed a sacrificial session of the gods. For the deities are thirty-three. The deities, desiring prosperity, practiced asceticism; they saw this course; they undertook it. Then, of them, one prospered on a single day, one on a single day, one on a single day. That which was the best of prosperities, that which was the holiest of worlds, in which the deities prospered by this, [they thought:] 'That which is the best of prosperities, that which is the holiest of worlds, in which the deities prospered by this, in that let us prosper.' Therefore they undertake these nights.
