let us conquer.' The sacrifice is fivefold; [thinking:] 'Whatever is the measure of the sacrifice, that let us attain.' Cattle are fivefold; [thinking:] 'Whatever is the measure of cattle, with that may cattle stand nearby secured for us.' Food is fivefold; [thinking:] 'Whatever is the measure of food, with that may food stand nearby secured for us.' Now the Kāpeyas used to say: 'Unestablished in a season is this six-day rite; established in a season is the five-day rite.' Spring is the first of seasons, summer the second, the rains the third, autumn the fourth, winter the fifth, the cool season the sixth. That winter is the best of seasons, with fat cattle and fat calves; established in it the five-day rite proceeds. Now this cool season is blameworthy, with lean cattle and lean men; established in it the six-day rite proceeds. [Thinking:] 'Winter, which is the best of seasons, established in its foundation let us proceed'—therefore they undertake this five-day variety. The introductory Atirātra is addressed to Vaiśvānara, for non-sacrificial Soma rituals commence with Vaiśvānara.
