vaiśvānarodayanā hyahīnāssomāḥ
Having slept, one should sip water;
one strikes evil alone.
One should strike an eight-legged cow [in sacrifice];
one strikes evil alone.
Those who, knowing thus, undertake these nights, arise having struck off all evil.
However, they are liable to become destitute of cattle, for cattle are the ukthas, and he thrust cattle away there also.
Those who desire prosperity should undertake these nights.
Formerly, the Brahmins of the Kuru-Pañcālas who desired prosperity used to undertake them.
They were without cows, unfortunate;
their cattle were among their kinsmen.
Then they anointed a cow for a cow-owner who had arrived;
then they gave [it] to one who was not to be given to.
Regarding this Śāṭyāyani said: 'One should not speak that which is reproached.
Whatever cattle are subject to desire belong to prosperity, whatever wealth is subject to desire; thinking, "We shall possess cattle and we shall be the best and we shall prosper," they should undertake these nights.'
So indeed it happens.
The concluding Atirātra is sacred to Vaiśvānara,
for the non-interrupted Soma rites have Vaiśvānara as their conclusion.
