Prajāpati indeed is seventeenfold. Prajāpati is the generator of creatures: [thinking] 'May we, generated by him who is the generator of creatures, generate offspring.' And they are in the Anuṣṭubh [meter]; speech is the Anuṣṭubh, speech is generation: [thinking] 'May we generate offspring from the generation of speech.' And they are Ukthya [days]; cattle are the ukthas, cattle are food: [thinking] 'Lest we cut off our offspring from cattle and food.' Concerning this, Śāṭyāyani said, disregarding the statement of Bhāllabeya: 'One should approach [them] only from the Abhijit. That which is this six-day rite of the pṛṣṭhas, that is indeed the Abhijit by resting-place. Those which are the stomas of the six-day rite of the pṛṣṭhas, these are they. In the six-day rite of the pṛṣṭhas there is only one seventeenfold [stoma], but in this one there are three seventeenfold [stomas]. Having made that stoma, they generate that. Since they generate the seventeenfold from the seventeenfold, the seventeenfold from the seventeenfold, the seventeenfold from the seventeenfold, and further beyond in the Viśvajit there are three seventeenfold [stomas], both of these, having joined together, generate that. Their firm standing is indeed here: one should approach [them] only from the Abhijit.'
