Now Āruṇi said to Aṣāḍha Sāvayasa who had omitted [days]: 'The Hotṛ sits in a defective year.'
He said: 'Do not speak to us thus! We indeed perform that as a twelve-night rite at the end.'
He then sang in reply to him:
'Whether greater or smaller, that is not equal to it; / when it is otherwise, a pot-sherd is placed on what is defective.'
'Thus, indeed, do I regard this of the Hotṛ.'
'Defective, indeed, do I regard the year of those who omit [days].
Moreover, their sacrificial session is undertaken as if flawed.
As a hare is, just so is the sacrifice.
He who tries to catch a hare with an intermission does not catch it;
but he who tries to catch it without intermission, he alone catches it.
Those who omit [days] are seeking it with an intermission;
therefore [a day] should not be omitted at all.'

atha ha smāha kusurbinda auddālakirutsṛjyaṃ caiva na neti
Then Kusurbinda Auddālaki used to say: 'It is both to be omitted and not [to be omitted].'

'Whatever day they might omit today, having reckoned it on the morrow, they should commence with praise [for it];'
