2-8.409

kiṃkhalu vai te'stītyabravīt
sto nvai ma imau prāṇāpānāviti
yatsto ma ityabravīttatstomasya stomatvam
stuvata enaṃ svā ayaṃ na śreṣṭha iti ya evaṃ veda
tamabravītsa vā etābhyāmeva saṃvatsaraṃ stuṣva
taṃ tvaitābhyāmeva tuṣṭuvānamupariṣṭāt saṃvatsarasya sarvā
devatāssamabhyavaiṣyantīti
sa etābhyāmeva saṃvatsaramastuta
tametābhyāmeva tuṣṭuvānamupariṣṭātsaṃvatsarasya sarvā devatāssamabhyavāyandiśāṃ
rasaṃ pravṛhyāpāṃ rasaṃ vedasya rasamannasya rasaṃ mahate vrataṃ harāmo mahate vrataṃ harāma
iti vadantīḥ
tā yadabruvanmahate vrataṃ harāma iti tanmahāvratasya mahāvratatvam
tadasmai prāyacchan
tadavratayat
tāḥ prāmodanta mahāvratayatīti mahāvratayatīti
tasmādetasminnahanpraiva modante
devatā hyasminprāmodanta
tadāhurmadhyatassaṃvatsarasya viṣuvatyupetyam

He said: 'What indeed remains of you?' 'These two, out-breath and in-breath, are mine (sto nvai me),' he replied. Because he said 'sto me', that is the stoma-nature of the stoma. His own kin praise him saying, 'This is our best,' whoever knows thus. He said to him: 'Praise [the deities] for a whole year with just these two. When you have praised with just these two, all the deities will come down together to you after the year.' He praised for a year with just these two. When he had praised with just these two, all the deities came down together to him after the year, having extracted the sap of the quarters, the sap of the waters, the sap of the Veda, and the sap of food, saying: 'We bring the great observance (mahate vratam) [to Prajāpati], we bring the great observance!' Because they said, 'We bring the observance to the great one,' that is why the Mahāvrata is so named. They presented it to him. He observed it as his vow. They rejoiced: 'He is keeping the Mahāvrata! He is keeping the Mahāvrata!' Therefore on this day they simply rejoice, for the deities rejoiced on it. As to that, they say: it should be performed in the middle of the year, on the Viṣuvant day.
