Regarding this they say: 'One should chant all at once [with all the priests], having formed the likeness of a bird.' When a bird flies up, it flies up having joined all its limbs separately. And when it alights, it alights having gathered all its limbs to its body. In that they chant all together at once, it is just as a bird, when flying up, would fly up having joined all its limbs separately. And in that they approach chanting one by one, it is just as a bird, when alighting, would alight having gathered all its limbs to its body. Now Bhāllabeya used to say: 'On this day no other [priest] should perform the priestly office of the Udgātṛ with the sāman. For this day is fortune, and the Udgātṛ is fortune. If on this day another should perform the priestly office of the Udgātṛ with the sāman, he would chide those who are not to be chided, and mount upon those not to be mounted; there would be a confusion of worse and better. Either he should conclude [the chant] gliding along successively, or he should approach chanting one by one.' Here they object, as it were, that the twenty-ninefold stoma is arrived at. Regarding this they say: 'The twenty-ninefold stoma is arrived at; like cows following the calling one to their own herd, O Janamejaya, or cattle to one who offers a thousandfold sacrifice, or as reed-stalks separate, indeed these [parts] return according to their proper places. Head enters head, two wings enter two wings, tail enters tail, trunk enters trunk. The twenty-ninefold stoma is arrived at; it should indeed be performed in this way.'
