They become composed of mind, composed of breath, composed of eye, composed of ear, composed of speech, composed of verse, composed of sacrificial formula, composed of sāman, composed of brahman, golden, immortal. The gods and the Asuras vied with each other. The gods ran up to Prajāpati: 'Let us conquer the Asuras!' He said: 'Neither you nor the Asuras know me. If you were to know me, then you would indeed flourish and the Asuras would perish.' 'Tell it to us then,' they said. He said: 'Meditate upon me as: "The Man is Prajāpati, the year." Then you will indeed flourish and the Asuras will perish.' They meditated upon him as: 'The Man is Prajāpati, the year.' Thereupon the gods flourished, and the Asuras perished. He who, knowing thus, meditates, 'The Man is Prajāpati, the year,' will flourish himself, and his hateful rival perishes.
