For this one goes out toward that one alone. He who knows thus neither sets nor goes out. Truly, these two are co-dwelling deities. He attains co-dwelling with these two. And truly, these two deities remain warding off all evil from him in these worlds. As long as this fire burns in this world, so long does Āditya [burn] in that world. The world of the one who knows thus does not perish as long as that. Just as a possessor of an abode would wish to reach an abode, so the waters wish to reach this world—both those above and these below. That they do not break through is by virtue of the performance of this very stoma. This stoma alone holds them apart. Now, one who is the protector of one kingdom, of two, of three, he would consider himself possessor of a world by that. But in the end he will possess the world, who will be one of those who are the protectors of this world. He who knows thus becomes one of the protectors of this world; by that he possesses a world. Truly, as long as there will be Brahmins who know thus, so long both those waters above and these below will not converge and wipe away this world.
2.241.p1
tasya vā etasyāgniṣṭomasya gāyatrīmeva prātaḥsavanaṃ saṃpadyate triṣṭubhaṃ mādhyaṃdinaṃ
Now, of this very Agniṣṭoma, the morning pressing corresponds to the Gāyatrī, the midday pressing to the Triṣṭubh,
2.241.p2
savanaṃ jagatīṃ tṛtīyasavanam
the third pressing to the Jagatī.
2.241.p3
tadetatsvayaṃsaṃpannaṃ prātaḥsavanam
This morning pressing is complete of itself:
2.241.p4
gāyatrameva sarvam
all is simply Gāyatra.
2.241.p5
atha catvāri chandāṃsi mādhyaṃdinaṃ savanaṃ gāyatrī bṛhatī kakuptriṣṭup
Now, the midday pressing contains four meters: Gāyatrī, Bṛhatī, Kakubh, Triṣṭubh.
2.241.p6
tasyā etasyai kakubho'ṣṭāviṃśatyakṣarāyai viṃśatimakṣarāṇi gāyatryāmupadadhāti
From this Kakubh of twenty-eight syllables, one adds twenty syllables to the Gāyatrī.
2.241.p7
sā triṣṭupsaṃpadyate
It becomes a Triṣṭubh.
2.241.p8
atha yānyaṣṭāvatiricyante tāni bṛhatyāmupadadhāti
Now, the eight [syllables] that remain over, those one adds to the Bṛhatī.
2.241.p9
sā triṣṭupsaṃpadyate
It becomes a Triṣṭubh.
2.241.p10
triṣṭubeva triṣṭup
The Triṣṭubh remains a Triṣṭubh.
