Three indeed are these oceans: the Pavamānas, namely, Fire, Wind, and yonder Āditya.
With them veiled, he should sing the Udgītha.
When Prajāpati bestows rain, food, upon creatures, they are veiled at that time; that is Prajāpati.
When, about to sing, he sings the Udgītha with the Pavamānas veiled, he veils the sacrificer with food, veils himself, veils [his] creatures.
“Where I sing the Udgītha, Parjanya brings abundant rain there,” Kūṭa Śailana used to say.
Where Parjanya brings abundant rain, handsome there is the ox, the mule, the elephant, the gold coin, the man.
“Every form born there is indeed handsome,” said he, knowing this.
He who separates the gods and mortals is separated from evil.
The gods indeed are the Pavamānas; creatures are the pṛṣṭhas and the ukthas.
He should sing the Udgītha with them, the Pavamānas, veiled, indirect, unexpressed;
for the gods are veiled, as it were, indirect, unexpressed.
Creatures are the pṛṣṭhas and the ukthas.
He should sing the Udgītha with them unveiled, direct, expressed;
for mortals are unveiled, as it were, direct, expressed.
This indeed separates the gods and mortals; he who knows thus is separated from evil.
