In the beginning, these worlds belonged to the Asuras. The gods were, as it were, dependent on them, relying on ascetic toil and faith. As they praised and wearied themselves, they placed brilliance, strength, faculty, and vital power into their own bodies. The Asuras wished to seize that from them. When it was about to be seized, they made it enter into the waters, [thinking,] 'Lest the Asuras find this.' Therefore even now, when enemies are approaching, people conceal their property, [thinking,] 'Lest enemies find this.' That strode away from the gods; it did not reach the Asuras. Those gods saw this toil of the year. Through it they toiled for it. It mounted upward. It stood touching (spṛṣṭa) heaven. Because it stood touching heaven, that is the touchingness of the touched (spṛṣṭa). These are indeed named the touched (spṛṣṭa); cryptically they are called pṛṣṭhas. Whoever knows thus touches all desires. Whatever he may desire, he should toil for a year: he surely secures it, for this toil is measured by a year.
