He stepped onto the two of them; they ferried him across. Thereupon he indeed found a path and a firm foundation. He who knows this finds a path and a firm foundation. And because Manu saw [them], therefore they are named the Mānavas. Now [follows] the Vāmra. It is an undertaking of the sacrifice, a turning back. One undertakes the sixth day and runs back to the fourth. By undertakings indeed the gods excluded the Asuras from the sacrifice. Vamra Vaikhānasa, desiring cattle, performed ascetic penance. He saw this sāman; with it he praised. Having reached this iḷā in the middle, he reached an adhyardhā-iḷā at the end. Cattle are indeed iḷā; the adhyardhā-iḷā is abundance. Thereupon he obtained an abundance of cattle in proper order. So this is a cattle-gaining sāman. He who knows this obtains an abundance of cattle in proper order. And because Vamra Vaikhānasa saw [it], therefore it is named the Vāmra.
