'May the calf restrain your mind,' / thus [the verses] contain the word 'ā' ('hither'). / That there are ukthas in the sacrifice's division is as if a separation. / Therefore, that they contain the word 'ā' is for the smooth continuity of the sacrifice. / On them [is sung] the Vātsa [sāman]. / Vatsa Kāṇva, desiring cattle, performed austerities. / He saw this sāman. / With it he praised. / He indeed was Triśoka ('Free of three sorrows') because of those three sorrows which he struck off; that was his triśoka-nature. / He then immediately obtained hornless, short-eared cattle. / That is this sāman belonging to cattle. / He who knows this obtains cattle and becomes rich in cattle. / Because Vatsa Kāṇva saw it, it is therefore called Vātsa. / 'You for us, O Indra, bring,' / [in the verse] there is the word 'you', which is the form of the bṛhat. / This day belongs to the bṛhat. / 'Might, manly strength, O performer of a hundred rites, watchful one, / bring hither a hero who overcomes battles,' that which contains hundred and thousand is the form of the Chandoma days. / The Chandoma days are cattle.
