On them [is sung] the Dharma. By the Dharma indeed the gods, having taken away the righteousness (dharma) of the asuras through lawlessness (vidharmaṇa), making them devoid of law, defeated them. By righteousness alone, having taken away the righteousness of his hateful rival, making him devoid of law, he defeats him, who knows thus. Royal glory is indeed righteousness; kingship is righteousness; by righteousness a king is righteous; he becomes the righteousness of his own people; to him his own people go; he upholds from righteousness. Concerning that they say, 'It should be performed on the ninth day; that over there is the kṣatra which belongs to the Bṛhant, and this here is the viś which belongs to the Rathantara.' But they also say, 'Of varied law indeed are kings, they do not have the same law as other men; and this forty-four-verse Triṣṭubh day is truly the kṣatra; therefore let there be diverse law (vidharman) on the ninth day, but this [Dharma sāman] here.' 'The sisterly dawns urge on the heroic lord, the great Soma, desiring greatness'—for great is this forty-four-verse day.
