—with this they cause him to shine. "Bright-shining between the two wide world-halves" [RV 1.36.2]—these two world-halves indeed are these [heaven and earth]; this intermediate space is the Maruts. "Well-offered, facing everywhere" [RV 1.36.2]—for facing backwards this three-day period is performed. "He who by his might overcomes all misfortunes" [RV 1.36.3]—thus they contain [the word] viśva ("all"), for this day belongs to the All-Gods. "Agni Jātavedas is praised in the house: may he protect us from misfortune and blame, us who praise him, and our patrons" [RV 1.36.12]—thereby he articulates a blessing. "You are Varuṇa, and Mitra, O Agni" [RV 2.1.4]—it is addressed to Agni and Varuṇa, for the expiation of what is ill-sacrificed. Whatever in the sacrifice is ill-chanted, ill-recited, or defective, this is for its expiation. "The Vasiṣṭhas magnify you with their thoughts" [RV 7.12.3]—for this day is magnified (vṛddha). "May there be riches in you, easy to gain; do you protect us always with welfare" [RV 7.12.3]—thereby he articulates a blessing.
