Then these Āprī-ājyas are [sung]. Prajāpati created creatures. Having created [them], he felt emptied. He saw these Āprī-ājyas. With them he filled himself up for freshness. Verily, they are emptied out, as it were, who come to this day. When these Āprī-ājyas are [sung], the sacrificers thereby fill themselves up for freshness. The ājyas are unexpressed, for the non-assailment of the meters, to distinguish between bad and good. He is separated from evil who knows thus. He utters the last foot to Indra and Agni, for the non-loss of the meters, for the revelation of the sacrifice. By the revealed sacrifice they attain the heavenly world. As to this, they say: 'Since they omit the tenth day from all the days, by what then are their Chandomas uninterrupted?' 'By the stoma,' he should say. The seventh day is twenty-fourfold; the tenth day is twenty-fourfold. And also because this one ājya is common [to them], it is by that very [reason].

'Born on high for thy drink…'—these [verses] containing 'up' (ud-) occur on the day of departure, and also for ascending to the heavenly world; for the heavenly world is this tenth day. 'He for us, for Indra, worthy of worship, for Varuṇa, the Maruts…'—thus they contain 'Marut'. Having the Maruts is indeed the form of the midday; thus they do not depart from the form of the midday. 'Desiring to win, we ask of the noble one all these splendors of men'—thus they contain 'desiring to win' (siṣāsant-); for desiring to win, they go to the heavenly world by means of this day.
