Him they cryptically call Sūrya.
'You are our lord, you are our supporter,' thus his own people and strangers wait upon him who knows thus.
Because he went westward taking [luster] and sounding, that is the Sorya-nature of Sorya.
That indeed is the note-nature of sound, that he went sounding.
Those gods said, 'Indeed he has carried [it] away!' (na hārṣīd vā ayam iti).
That became the day (ahar).
'Indeed it has been given (rātam) to him!'—that itself became the night (rātri).
This indeed is the origin of day and night.
He who thus knows this origin of day and night attains day and night; these two do not pass beyond him.
Everything else here indeed has an end;
these two indeed are endless, namely day and night.
These two indeed, revolving here, encompass everything.
Just as one standing in the seat of a chariot would look down upon the two side-bars, even so, standing in the world of Āditya, one looks down upon these two, day and night.
He said to his father Prajāpati, 'Father, that which is your fiery energy, faculty, vital power—give that to me.'
'So be it,' [said Prajāpati].
He gave it to him.
Therefore, a father also, while still living, hands over control to his son.
