Having become food, he practiced austerity. From that, a Puruṣa made of food was born, the creator of creatures. Within those waters, he uttered: 'bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ.' These very worlds came into being. Following that, the directions were created. Then, because he uttered: 'karaj janad vṛdhat,' these very worlds came into being. Following that, the seasons were created. He said: 'These indeed have been (sad) mine.' Those very [words] became the months. Following that, the seasons were created. He said: 'These indeed have been mine.' Those very [words] became the months. 'Prosper (ṛddhiṣva)!'—those became the half-months. 'I have succeeded (ahamarātsam), I have shone (oṣam)'—that he said 'aham' (I), those became the days; that he said 'arātsam' (I have succeeded), those became the nights; that he said 'oṣam' (I have shone), those became the dawns. The speech that he uttered as he was being born, that itself became the threefold god. Whatever deity he uttered at the beginning as he was being born, that indeed became the brahman. He considered: 'This threefold Veda that I have emitted—come, let me create from it!'
