Now, the Yauktāśva [sāman] has a preliminary stobha, an outside finale, and belongs to the Bṛhat.
Therefore it is performed on the Bṛhat day.
Vasiṣṭha was the domestic priest of King Sudās Paijavana, the Aikṣvāka.
That Sudās Paijavana deposited mares with Vasiṣṭha, as [kings] deposit with a domestic priest.
Vasiṣṭha, setting out on an acquisition tour, said to his younger brother Yuktāśva: "You must oversee these animals of ours."
That Yuktāśva swapped the newborn foals of the king's mares:
those that were handsome he kept for himself;
those that were worse [he placed] among the king's mares.
They found out about it: "He has swapped the newborn foals."
They harassed him: "You are a thief, not a ṛṣi."
He desired: "May I find faith, may they summon me."
He saw this sāman.
With it he chanted praise.
