Regarding this they say: 'Indeed, they create, as it were, discord among the meters when, the morning pressing being in the Gāyatrī [meter], all the meters are sung upon [it]; the offspring become contentious.' He who should desire, 'May peaceful offspring thrive,' should not sing differently the [strophic] yokes (dhuras). But [if he did not], he would make the sacrificer's sacrifice headless, and he would accept the sacrificial gifts falsely. For the sacrificer gives sacrificial gifts thinking, 'He will perform the sacred work (brahman).' He should wish to act in such a way that he neither makes the sacrificer's sacrifice headless nor accepts the sacrificial gifts falsely. He should indeed sing differently. But whoever, wishing to sing them differently, is unable to sing them differently, meets with misfortune. If he is unable to sing the seed-verse differently, he becomes devoid of seed himself, and seedless embryos are born. If he is unable to sing the Gāyatrī differently, he becomes prone to death himself, and dead embryos are born. If he is unable to sing the Triṣṭubh differently, he becomes blind himself, and blind embryos are born. If he is unable to sing the Jagatī differently, he becomes deaf himself, and deaf embryos are born. If he is unable to sing the Anuṣṭubh differently, he becomes tongueless himself, and tongueless embryos are born. If he is unable to sing the Paṅkti differently, the seasons become disordered. Therefore, one who would not venture to sing them differently should sing them indirectly with their characteristic form. But the seed-verse is indeed sung in both ways.
