The gods and the Asuras vied in these worlds, in this creation. The gods desired: 'May we conquer these worlds; [may we conquer] the Asuras, the rival cousins.' They saw these Ājya stotras. They praised with them. With them they conquered these [worlds]. They conquered this very world with the Agni-related [stotra], the intermediate space with the Mitra-Varuṇa-related, that [heavenly world] with the Indra-related, and the directions with the Indra-Agni-related. That they conquered (ā-jayan) these worlds, that is the nature of the Ājya stotras (ājyatva). He conquers these worlds and the rival, hating cousin, who knows thus. Those gods said: 'Let us divide these.' They could not agree upon their division. They said: 'Let us run a race for them, making the mountain the goal.' That they said, 'Let us run a race (ājim ayāma),' that is their second nature of Ājya (ājyatva). And that they made the mountain the goal (kāṣṭhā), therefore that mountain is named 'goal' (kāṣṭha).
