He said: 'O Agni, whichever of us two conquers this, let that belong to both of us together.' 'So be it.' Agni conquered it. It came to belong to both of them together: one and a half of the stotra to the one, one and a half to the other. The sacrifice belongs to Indra and Agni. He who thus knows these conquests of the gods, wherever he desires, 'May I conquer here,' conquers there. In this regard they say: 'Since all the Ājya [stotras] have identical cadences, by what are they made non-monotonous?' He should say: 'By having different deities; thereby they are non-monotonous.' And also: 'Because they have different forms, thereby also.' These [stotras] are indeed cattle. That they praise the Ājya [stotras] inside the sadas hall, therefore domestic cattle have their dwelling inside the settlement. On [verses] directed away they turn back again; therefore domestic cattle go away in the morning and return together in the evening. They praise upon [verses] of various forms; therefore domestic cattle are of various forms. They praise upon [verses] addressed to various deities; therefore domestic cattle are manifold. They go home in the evening each to its own place.
