1.112

He thereby unites breath with breath in its middle. And if he should go astray, he should sing: "Out-breath, in-breath, diffused breath." 'Prā-ṇa'—that is two syllables; 'a-pā-na'—that is three; 'vyā-na'—that is three. That amounts to eight. The Gāyatrī has eight syllables. Thereby he does not depart from the Gāyatrī. One should not enter the interior wilderness of the sāman. Whoever enters the interior wilderness of the sāman undergoes complete ruin or dies. This indeed is the interior wilderness of the sāman: when the introductory chant is taken up without melody. Having made it conform with the melody, he should chant the udgītha. This indeed is the sāman's own property: its melody. By its own property he thus causes it to thrive. This indeed is the sāman's food: its melodies. With food he thus causes it to thrive. This indeed is the sāman's abode: its melody. In its abode he thus causes it to thrive. This indeed is the sāman's dear dwelling: its melody. In its dear dwelling he thus causes it to thrive.
