Having raised all those syllables, he should apply speech. Speech is indeed the brahman. Just as one might pass over thorn-bushes, covering [one's feet] with leather, so indeed, having crushed the obstacle of the sacrifice with speech, with the brahman, he safely crosses over and suffers no misfortune. Now, the pratihartṛ priest is cut off from the sāman when he does not chant the pratihāra of the gāyatra [sāman]. While it is being introduced by the prastotṛ, he should respond with him in mind; having exhaled, he should say, "vāc" (speech). Thus he is not cut off from the sāman, nor does he suffer misfortune. Whoever knows the syllable endowed with shoots, him do [chariots] endowed with shoots, yoked together, convey. Speech indeed is the syllable; breath indeed is its shoot. Him do [chariots] endowed with shoots, yoked together, convey, who knows thus.
