'Thus is that his poetic wisdom, thus is he continuous with the fires,' so [he recited]. 'The mind,' he said. 'The mind, indeed, is the swiftest among the beings. By the mind alone he remains not having journeyed away,' so indeed he said that. Then he sang to him: 'When he has gone far away and then becomes heedless there, in what is that oblation of his offered, which they offer for him at home?' The Vājasaneya said: 'He who is awake among the beings, knowing that while journeying away, he knows [the rite]; in that is that oblation of his offered, which they offer for him at home.' 'The breath,' he said. 'The breath, indeed, is awake among the beings. In the breath alone that oblation of his comes to be offered. Therefore they say: the breath is the fire-offering. For as long as he breathes with the breath, so long does he offer the fire-offering.'
