1.205

He slays his hateful rival, he swiftly attains fortune, who knows thus.
They chant the stoma of the Ṣoḍaśin handing over gold.
Thereby they make the Ṣoḍaśin itself luminous.
A horse stands by to be looked upon during the sāman.
It stands there driving away the realm of their rivals.
"Than whom no other was born greater, who became all beings,
Prajāpati, bestowing upon his offspring, attains the three lights; he is the sixteenth"—
with these words he looks upon the cup for the Ṣoḍaśin.
"Indra the sovereign ruler and Varuṇa the king, both of them first partook of this of yours;
after both of them I partake of the portion; let speech, enjoying, be satisfied with Soma"—thus with one syllable.
The gods had the lowest with one syllable, the highest with seven syllables.
The asuras had the lowest with nine syllables, the highest with fifteen syllables.
Those gods desired: "With less, may we strip away more from the asuras."
With one syllable they stripped away fifteen syllables; with two syllables, fourteen syllables; with three syllables, thirteen syllables; with four syllables, twelve syllables; with five syllables, eleven syllables; with six syllables, ten syllables; with seven syllables, nine syllables;
with eight syllables, eight indeed.
Thus he strips away the greater [possessions] of his hateful rival with less, who knows thus.
