1.22

Āruṇi Vājasaneya, Barku Vārṣṇa, Priya Jānaśruteya, Buḍila Āśvatarāśvi, [and] Vaiyāghrapadya—these five were great sages. Now, these great Brahmins assembled: Āruṇi, Jīvala Kārīrādi, Aṣāḍha Sāvayasa, and Indradyumna Bhāllaveya.
They said: 'This Janaka of Videha has been instructed in the fire-offering; he thinks himself, as it were, to out-talk us. Come,
let us make him talk in discourse on the fire-offering.'
They came.
They said to the Vedic student: 'Announce us.'
He announced them.
For them, when they had been announced, he arranged separate seats, separate water, separate madhuparka offerings, separate dwellings; for each of the five he arranged five honors.
Then he entered into their assembly, having shaved his hair and beard, clipped his nails, anointed himself with ghee, carrying a staff and shoes.
He said to them: 'Brahmins, on what discourse would you venerable ones converse with us?'
'You have out-talked us!' they said.
Then he asked them first: 'Brahmins, how do you venerable ones perform the fire-offering?'
'You have out-talked us indeed,' they said, 'in that you, being one, have asked us first who are many.
Gautama, answer!'
