Now the Maidhātitha.
The descendants of Kaṇva, having risen from a sacrificial session, went on, yoking [their carts].
The descendants of Kaṇva, having risen from a sacrificial session, went on, yoking [their carts].
They, chanting, hungry, approached this grove full of cucumbers, wondering what they might eat.
They desired: 'May we produce these as living cattle.'
Medhātithi Kāṇva saw this sāman.
They sat down near it [and sang]:
'Come here, sit down, sing forth unto Indra, / O friends who bring the stoma,
most abundant among the many, the lord of desirable things, / unto Indra when Soma is pressed;
may he be with us in acquisition, may he be for wealth, may he be for wisdom.'
Wealth is cattle.
Then indeed they produced them as living cattle.
With the sound 'hiṃ' indeed they produced them.
These are the speckled-cucumber cattle here behind.
This sāman is the production of cattle.
He secures cattle, he becomes rich in cattle, who knows thus.
And because Medhātithi Kāṇva saw it, therefore it is called Maidhātitha.
