Then, having dug a pit in this quarter, they shave his hair and beard.
Having shaved the hair and beard, they clip the nails.
Having clipped the nails, they remove his entrails.
Having removed the entrails, they remove the excrement.
Having removed the excrement, they cover the excrement in the pit with dust.
Thereby they conceal his evil.
Having washed the entrails and put them back, they carry him.
Having laid him down between the fires, having melted and purified ghee on the gārhapatya, having taken four ladlings of ghee, having gone to the āhavanīya, while [the dead man] is touched from behind, he offers [the oblation] accompanied by firewood: "You indeed are from him; he is you; this is you; this is your source; you are his source.
Father, world-maker for the son, O Jātavedas,
lead him to where is the world of the well-doers.
You indeed were born from him; let him be born from you, svāhā!"
He then comes into being made of oblations, made of mind, made of breath, made of sight, made of hearing, made of speech, made of verses (ṛc), made of formulas (yajus), made of chants (sāman), made of brahman, golden, immortal.
