1.77

They sit down behind, facing east. Thereby they secure speech in front. If they were to sit down in front, facing east, they would put speech behind them; speech would be liable to fail them. Speech indeed departed from the gods; she entered the trees. It is she who is in the axle. When they push the wooden trough underneath the axle, he thereby secures divine speech. The Udgātṛs push the wooden trough underneath the axle for the udgītha. He who knows thus cuts off his spiteful rival from this world. He should not touch the axle. If he were to touch the axle, he would confer prosperity upon his rival. He pushes it between the two wheels. Therefore, what is between the two wheels of a cart is the most sustaining of life. Therefore, yoked between the two yoke-pins, [the draft-animal] eats.
