“Agni is kindled by Agni” — [with this verse] there is the Āgneya Ājya [śastra] connected with the Rathantara; for this day is connected with the Rathantara. When indeed Agni is kindled by Agni, then by the Rathantara the Vairūpa is kindled, or by the Vairūpa the Rathantara. And regarding this, the wife of Saujāta Arāṭi said: “Now, my husband thought there were only two pṛṣṭhas; then who is this donkey braying towards the post of udumbara wood?” Regarding this they say: “This day is connected with the Rathantara; therefore the Rathantara should be made the pṛṣṭha of this day.” But regarding this they also say: “Who indeed would be a person, who indeed, if he were only self, as it were, and not cattle? The Bṛhat and Rathantara are the self; the pṛṣṭhas are cattle. Therefore only the Vairūpa should be made the pṛṣṭha of this day.” Now, that the Vairūpa is the pṛṣṭha of this day, thereby they establish cattle in the self.
