10.39

Thereby they summon speech, which has conveyed the sacrifice, at the end. “All has extended what was done before” — for at this point it is done, as it were, before. “Indra and Agni do not fail; mighty, they are the slayers of the assailers” — the word “vi” is the characteristic of the atmosphere; this day belongs to the atmosphere. “You slay the Aryan enemies, you slay the Dāsa enemies, O lords of truth; you slay all haters” — [this] relates to the slaying of Vṛtra, for ultimate victory. By this three-day rite, indeed, the gods triumphed in the beginning. Since this ājya relating to the slaying of Vṛtra is performed at the end, it is for victory, for the slaying of the rival. He triumphs, he slays the hateful rival, who knows this. The stoma is seventeenfold. Prajāpati is seventeenfold. In Prajāpati they thus go on establishing themselves.

10.39.p1

“High on behalf of your pressed drink…” — [with this verse] there are Gāyatrī [verses] containing the word “drink” for the midday purifying [laud]; drink is food, [and this is] for the securing of food. “Dwelling in heaven, giving to the earth” — [these verses] belong to Heaven and Earth. Unestablished, as it were, is this day which is Vairūpa. Now, since these verses belong to Heaven and Earth, they establish the day by means of them. “He for us to Indra, worthy of worship, to Varuṇa, to the Maruts” — [these verses] contain [the name of] the Maruts. Accompaniment by the Maruts is indeed the characteristic of the midday; they do not deviate from that characteristic of the midday. “Through these all, belonging to the noble” — [these verses] contain [the word] “all”; for this day belongs to the All-Gods.
