12.52

They did not discern the heavenly world, this third day. They desired: 'May we discern the heavenly world, this third day.' Speech, singing a sāman, floated up to them. They saw it. With it they praised. With it they prospered. With it they discerned the heavenly world, this third day. That is this prosperity-giving, heaven-procuring sāman. He prospers, he goes to the heavenly world, who knows thus. That which is auspicious and peaceful in speech, that is the sāman. They say of one speaking well, 'He speaks melodiously (sāmanvat).' In that this sāman exists, they pacify the three-day period with the auspicious and peaceful part of speech. And because speech, singing a sāman, floated up, therefore it is called the Sāman of Speech (Vācassāma). 'Friends, sit down; sing forth to the purifying one'—thus they contain [the word] 'pra' and [the word] 'pari'. In that they contain 'pra', it is for the generation of the fourth day. Then, in that they contain 'pari', it is the form of the end, for this day is the end: 'Whatever is the end, let it be the end.' For with 'pari, pari' they go around (paryanti) the end.
