13.54
The heavenly world is indeed the end of the worlds.
It is for the heavenly world that this third day is performed.
When it is thus, as it were, held back, it is so that the heavenly world is not missed.
'Thy filter is spread out, O lord of prayer'
—thus they contain [the word] 'filter'.
This midspace that is spread out is, as it were, a filter.
This day belongs to the midspace.
'Lording it, thou goest round the limbs on all sides'
—thus they contain [the word] 'all'.
For this day belongs to the All-Gods.
'One whose body is unheated, the raw one, does not attain that; only the cooked ones, bearing it, taste it together'
—[this is] for attainment.
'The filter of the ardent [heat] is spread out in the realm of heaven; shining, its threads have stretched out;
its swift ones help him who purifies; they ascend the back of heaven with luster'
—[this is] for the attainment of the heavenly world.
'The spotted, primal bull has brightened the dawns; striving for prize, he bellows in the worlds;
the wonder-workers measured by his wondrous power; the farsighted fathers placed the embryo'
—thus they place the embryo again on this third day, for the generation of the fourth day.
13.54.p1
Upon these [verses] is the Ariṣṭa [sāman], for the unharmed condition of the sacrifice.
Whatever indeed of the sacrifice is badly chanted, badly recited, or disjointed, this is truly for the uninjured state of that.
Through this, the sacrifice is unharmed.
The gods, indeed, performed this twelve-day rite.
Whatever of theirs was about to come to harm, they made unharmed through the Ariṣṭa.
That is the Ariṣṭa's nature of being unharmed.
Through the unharmed twelve-day rite, he crosses over evil and attains prosperity, who knows thus.
It has three Iḷās; cattle, indeed, are Iḷā.
Cattle belong to this day, for the obtaining of cattle in regular succession.
Three Iḷās are truly a healing.
Three Iḷās are indeed that which is auspicious and appeased of speech.
Because it has three Iḷās on the third day, by that very means they appease the three days.
