2-3.128

The racecourse was indeed just as wide as the passage of a chariot. Thereupon he won that race. Because Bṛhaspati won, therefore it is the Bṛhaspatisava. To him, who had won that race, Indra said: 'I will appoint you as [my] domestic priest; sacrifice for me with this sacrifice.' Saying, 'So be it,' he appointed him as domestic priest. With it he sacrificed for him. Thereupon Indra attained preeminence among all the gods. He who knows thus attains preeminence among his own people. That sacrifice belongs only to two: to the Brahmin and to the nobleman. Because Bṛhaspati won it, it belongs to the Brahmin; because Indra sacrificed with it, it belongs to the nobleman. He was the domestic priest of Indra alone, not of the other gods. He desired, 'May I attain the domestic priesthood of all the gods.' He sacrificed with this very sacrifice. Thereupon he attained the domestic priesthood of all the gods. Bṛhaspati is indeed the domestic priest of the gods.
