2-3.139

In the beginning, sacrifice was indeed in Indra;
prosperity was indeed in him then;
and sacrifice indeed is the prosperity of the gods.
And Vṛtra grew over against him.
He ran up to the gods [saying]: 'With you as my strength, may I slay this Vṛtra.'
They said to him: 'Give to us that exclusive sacrifice of yours.'
Therefore, when the king desires to conquer, the clans desire a gift [from him];
and therefore the king, when desiring to conquer, gives a gift to the clans.
He gave the morning pressing to the Vasus, the midday pressing to the Rudras, [and] the third pressing to the Ādityas and the All-Gods.
With them as his strength, Indra slew Vṛtra;
the gods conquered the Asuras.
Having slain Vṛtra, having conquered, he saw these splendors of theirs shining separately.
Blame came upon him.
He considered: 'How indeed may I appropriate these splendors of theirs?'
He sacrificed with this very sacrifice.
By it he appropriated all their splendors.
He who knows thus appropriates the splendor of his spiteful rival.
