2-3.14

The Mahāvrata belongs to Prajāpati; each is made with that characteristic. Then the Naudhasa, the known Brahma sāman; it is the known Brahma sāman, so that 'we may not omit it.' Then the Pṛśni sāman; Pṛśni is food, for the securing of food. Then the Rauhiṇaka sāman; through this, Prajāpati ascended to the desire of single-hoofed cattle. In that he ascended to [their] desire, that is the Rauhiṇaka nature of the Rauhiṇaka; he who knows thus ascends to the desire of cattle. Just as these forest beasts are wild animals, so were these single-hoofed cattle in the beginning. By these very kiṭkiṭa sounds of the Rauhiṇaka he led them to the village. It has a thirteen[-syllable] nidhana, for obtaining the thirteenth month. It is equipped with eighties; they feed him through this. Then the Dairghaśravasa sāman; Dairghaśravasa is food, for the securing of food. Then the Samanta sāman, that 'we may be surrounded by offspring and cattle.' Then the Yaudhājaya sāman with three nidhanas, for the arrangement of the soma pressings. Then the Auśana sāman, the final sāman, so that 'we may reach the highest heavenly world by means of the final sāman.'
