It would be redundant. If they were to interrupt [it], that which is the side would be disrupted. The Ilānda should be performed on the Anuṣṭubh of the Ārbhava Pavamāna, [thinking,] 'Lest we omit that which has been mentioned.' [Others say:] 'Only the Vāravantīya should be performed.' For it, this is a fair commendation indeed. But it is, as it were, forbidden: however many times a man sacrifices, so much he wishes to thrive, so much he desires, 'May I become better, may I become better.' That should be performed on the Gāyatrī of the Ārbhava Pavamāna, [thinking,] 'Lest we omit that which has been mentioned.' But concerning this they also say: 'That which no other speech exceeds, that should be made the Agniṣṭoma-sāman of this day. No other speech exceeds the Yajñāyajñīya. For the Yajñāyajñīya is speech. From where indeed could speech exceed speech? Therefore, only the Yajñāyajñīya should be made the Agniṣṭoma-sāman of this day.' Then they make this [sāman] measured to thirty-four upon the Anuṣṭubh. Thirty-three indeed are the deities; Prajāpati is the thirty-fourth. Together with Prajāpati the gods thrive through this. Now, that it is measured to thirty-three on the Ārambhaṇīya day, thereby they make the deities alone thrive. But through this [thirty-four-fold], having prospered and attained [fullness] along with Prajāpati, the deities ultimately rise [from the rite].
