Now there is this royal throne of udumbara wood. Its two front legs are the Bṛhat and the Rathantara, the two rear legs are the Vairūpa and the Vairāja, the two longitudinal sides are the Śākvara and the Raivata. The ṛc verses are the longitudinal warp, the yajus formulas the cross-threads, the sāmans the covering spread over it, dialogue the cross-bars, splendor the bolster. Prajāpati and Bṛhaspati held its two front legs, Soma and Varuṇa the two rear legs. On it they anointed this Āditya: the Vasus for kingship, the Rudras for paramount rule, the Ādityas for self-rule, the All-Gods for imperial rule, the Maruts for all-sovereignty, and the Sādhyas and Āptyas for supreme authority. Not so much was conquered by any deity as by Āditya. For those who were pressed [soma-drinkers] among the gods anointed him. In him the quarters wished for a share, just as they wish for a share in a conquering king. He said to them: 'Give me a gift.' This eastern quarter gave: 'Rise upon me!'—[and she gave] day and truth. The upward quarter gave: 'Rise over me!'—[and she gave] dominion and realm. The southern quarter gave: 'Descend toward me!'—[and she gave] food and the chariot. The northern quarter gave: 'Descend toward me!'—[and she gave] form and color. The atmosphere gave: 'Go through my midst!'—[and it gave] light and unconfined space. The western quarter gave: 'Set over me!'—[and she gave] cosmic order and night. The earth gave: 'Shine along me!'—
