"The two Atirātras, the Ārambhaṇīya and Mahāvrata days, the Pṛṣṭhya and Abhiplava [six-day periods], the Abhijit, the three Svarasāman [days], the three reverse Svarasāman [days], the Viśvajit, the Go and Āyus [days], the ten-day period, and the Vaiṣuvata itself as the thirty-seventh mounted upon this heavenly world. Concerning this there is this verse: / 'That thirty-six-fold Bṛhatī being arranged, / they say, is seven hundred and twenty [syllables]; / having become the Anuṣṭubh, equal in womb with cattle, / she supports the gods, the fathers, and mortals.' / Thus. 'That... they say, is seven hundred and twenty'—these are indeed the days and nights. 'The thirty-six-fold Bṛhatī being arranged'—thus indeed is the thirty-six-fold Bṛhatī arranged through the days. 'Having become the Anuṣṭubh, equal in womb with cattle'—this very quarter brought the cow, this the horse, this the goat, this the sheep. To this Anuṣṭubh, indeed, being the [meter of] the quarters, they brought tribute; such indeed is that. 'She supports the gods, the fathers, and mortals'—speech indeed is the Anuṣṭubh; by speech, indeed, all this is maintained. Thus indeed the year becomes consisting of a single meter, Bārhati."
