Hṛtsvāśaya Āllakeya was a disciple of Dantāla Dhaumya.
Now Dantāla Dhaumya knew the three Vedas right down to the tips of his toes.
Therefore, having studied the Sāmaveda, he declared, "I shall consecrate myself for a year."
Then, previously, people had wandered about asking, "We shall consecrate ourselves for a year."
And then, having assembled, shouting out at each other’s choice, they would sit inquiring secretly.
However many could provide [the prerequisites], that many would consecrate themselves.
This was indeed always their prayer.
That becomes a sacrificial session wherein they conclude making that very Brahmin [their guide] with whom, as declared by the non-Brahmin, they consecrate themselves.
Therefore one should consecrate oneself with [a Brahmin] indicated by a non-Brahmin.
A tiger-skin, a jewel, and gold were placed in readiness for this nobleman.
Having dispatched that to a learned Brahmin, he said, "I shall consecrate myself for a year; instruct me!"
They thought that they should speak to this nobleman.
