Now these are the three paths well-made, traveled by the gods: consisting of syllables, consisting of words, and consisting of verses.
Knowing these, they carry the Brahmin to where Death becomes his food.
This has been sung in a verse:
"Three are the paths well-made, traveled by the gods: consisting of syllables, consisting of words, and consisting of verses.
Knowing these, they carry the Brahmin to where Death becomes his food.
Licking the immortal [drink] syllable by syllable, foot by foot, the deities went to the sun from the sacrificial session of the gods.
Having followed after the rite with ascetic heat, the wise poets instantly went beyond Death by wisdom;
understanding, burning [all obstacles], they go beyond sorrow;
when the wise fly without wings
to where the immortal is found and not Death,
there the knowing, wise poets dwell."
So it is.
The officiating priests who know thus carry the sacrificer to the worlds, to cattle, to desires.
He attains chant and recitation in the sacrifices whose officiating priests—the adhvaryu, hotṛ, and sāmavedic singer—are inexhaustible.
For him the meters flow with streams of honey.
He attains chant and recitation in the sacrifices whose officiating priests—the adhvaryu, hotṛ, and sāmavedic singer—are inexhaustible.
For him the meters, waving with stotras and śastras, carry forth canals of immortality.
